Sorry, I haven’t posted in a few days. Our family has been quite busy. This weekend Jon and Lisa competed in the Iron Man bike race and the boys and I walked for March of Dimes. We are very thankful that we are able to have trustworthy employees to allow us to do activities that we enjoy.
Our farm has always been a family affair. For that past 104 years fathers, mothers, sons and daughters have always work together to care for our animals and land. But in addition to our family, our farm would not be where it is today without the help of some of our loyal employees. Zweber Farms has always had a one or two employees to help us.
Our current employee, Jen, is fantastic. She is energetic, loves to work with cattle and is a fantastic cook and baker. She actually brings us some of her yummy creations (homemade marshmallows anyone?). Yes, she is a keeper.
Many people criticize farms that have employees. They say “how could it can be a family business if they have employees.” Or “If they have employees, they cannot be directly involved with the farm” We have even heard other dairy farmers criticizing those with employees and bragging that they have never taken a vacation or even a had an evening off.
We are very lucky to be able to have employees. At our farm our employees are our family. They also allow us to be a family. You see, without employees our family would not able to attend weddings, go on vacation or have an evening a few times a month to relax and spend with family.
At what point is a farm no longer a “family” farm? I am not sure. We know very large dairies that employ many people and the family is still involved in the day to day animal care and milking. They work sunrise to sunset and directly with their employees. I would still consider them a family farm. No one criticizes the family owned hardware store or bakery for having employees, not sure why a farm would be different.
Speaking of employees we are still taking applications for our internship. If you are interested please view our application.
We are lucky to be able to have such good employees, such as Jen. They bring the “family” into family farm.
