Here Piggy Piggy-The Pigs have Arrived on the Farm

We have been so busy, that I forgot to post last week that the pigs have arrived. They are very cute right now and weigh between 35-50 lbs. We buy our feeder pigs from a small farmer in south western MN that produces pork for Niman Ranch.

Our pigs get a large straw and corn stock bedded building to run around in. They also have access to a “patio” outside where they can enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and of course the mud.

Did you know that pigs do not sweat? That is right, the only place they have sweat glands is in their nose. So when someone says you are sweating like a pig say “Thanks.” Pigs are actually the most clean farm animals, but since they have no way to cool themselves, they tend to like to lay in the mud when it is available. Mud also provides protection from the sun, since their hair is very fine.

This year will be feeding our pigs a mixture of GMO free barley and peas. We will raise our pigs until they weigh about 230-250lbs. They will reach this weight around October.
